But Lose Information technology

"Merely Lose It" is a song past American rapper Eminem from his fifth studio album, Encore (2004). It was released on September 28, 2004 as the lead unmarried from Encore, and was afterwards included on his greatest hits compilation album, Curtain Call: The Hits (2005). The song caused controversy equally its lyrics and music video parodies Michael Jackson, who was being accused of kid molestation at the time. The song too pokes fun at Beavis/Cornholio, MC Hammer, Madonna, and others. It as well heavily spoofs Pee-wee Herman, going as far every bit imitating his signature shout during the chorus and Eminem dressing like him in the video.
The song peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and reached number one in Australia, Kingdom of denmark, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom every bit well as the pinnacle 10 in Republic of austria, Belgium, Republic of finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Kingdom of norway.
Groundwork [edit]
Two skits regarding the Michael Jackson controversy were included on Encore, "Paul (Skit)" and "Em Calls Paul (Skit)". The lyrics to "Just Lose It" refer to Jackson's legal troubles, even so he does country in his vocal "... and that'due south not a stab at Michael, That's just a metaphor, I'yard merely psycho...." At the beginning of the song there is a lyrical extract from Eminem's 2002 single "Without Me" about how "Shady's back". The line "Snap back to reality. Await! It'southward B. Rabbit" and "You signed me up to boxing" refers to "Lose Yourself" and Eminem's grapheme in the moving-picture show 8 Mile. In the second verse of the song there is a line "So fellas, fellas..." which is a reference to Sir Mix-a-Lot's song "Baby Got Dorsum". The line "Daughter yous know y'all're my earth," from the chorus, is a reference to the chorus of his song "Superman" from his album The Eminem Show.
Critical reception [edit]
The vocal received mixed reviews from critics, many of whom plant it too similar to Eminem'due south previous work. AllMusic highlighted the song in a review of the album.[1] Pitchfork was also positive: "'Just Lose Information technology' is all the same virtually notable for dancing with paedo and homoerotic imagery: It'southward the 1 track here that seems as potentially multilayered as the all-time of The Marshall Mathers LP, yet it's still more than curio than anything else."[2] NME wrote: "Em (is) reduced to making funny noises to continue things interesting."[3] David Browne of Entertainment Weekly, however, felt mixed: "Offset [on the anthology] came the sarcastically bouncy "But Lose It", a lazy retread of before hits that, with its piece of cake-target references to Michael Jackson, made Eminem announced to be the one who'd really lost it."[4] J-23 panned the song and called information technology "by far the worst song Eminem or Dr. Dre has ever made. Information technology really seems like their object here was to brand the worst song possible. The interlude leading into it is damn hilarious though."[5] Los Angeles Times called information technology "the album's hilarious slap at celebrity voyeurism, with Eminem himself a prominent target."[6]
RapReviews argued it isn't "dropping whatsoever jaws or widening any eyes."[7] Rolling Stone described this vocal as "dance-music dis."[8] In a review praising Encore's "edginess," Steve Jones of USA Today cited the song's mocking of the Michael Jackson child-molestation scandal.[9] Alexis Petridis of The Guardian, yet, wrote: "[Eminem's] plan appears to involve belching and making fart noises, which, with the all-time will in the world, won't suffice."[10] Kelefa Sanneh of The New York Times wrote that song "unfolds as a series of puzzlingly unfunny jokes."[11] Stylus Magazine was negative also, calling it "Em's brand new tendency to bite himself."[12] The Austin Chronicle was a flake negative as well: "Where 2002 smash 'Without Me' was bitingly clever, Encore 'southward carbon copy 'Simply Lose It' is puerile and embarrassing, even though he quotes Beavis and Butt-head and does a wicked Pee-wee Herman."[13] Slant Mag said that the song "was and so derivative that information technology had to be a joke—fifty-fifty the vocal's title seemed to mock the Academy Award-winning eight Mile theme song that elevated the Smashing White Rapper to a whole new level of acceptance (every bit if he hadn't already transcended almost every other boundary in pop culture). Non but is 'Only Lose It' the worst song on Encore, it's easily one of the virtually annoying songs of the year (credit Em'due south ceaseless Pee Wee Herman impersonations and tired attacks on Michael Jackson)."[14]
Music video [edit]
The video contains a parody of a rap battle scene from 8 Mile in which it is Eminem, as B-Rabbit, versus Eminem, as Slim Shady. It also contains several scenes where Eminem is walking down the streets naked. As he is doing this, Dr. Dre is driving next to him, looking disgusted. For the music video, the lyrics were edited slightly, notably the phrase "milk shake that ass", condign the less provocative "shake that thing". Other changes include the muting of some parts of the second poesy, and the phrase "barrel naked" becoming "buck naked". Such examples of parodies that are included in this video are Michael Jackson, MC Hammer and his hit unmarried "U Can't Touch This", Pee-wee Herman, Madonna, blink-182 and the music video for What's My Age Once again, and the movie Bad Santa, past displaying Eminem equally a "mall santa", and even going so far to include Tony Cox, the role player who played the elf from the actual movie, as Eminem'south helper. Some of the celebrities who appeared in this music video were Paris Hilton, Monica Parales, Erik Estrada, Alyson Stoner, BooBoo Stewart, Omar Benson Miller, De'Angelo Wilson, Mekhi Phifer and Dr. Dre. The video was afterwards nominated at the MTV Video Music Awards for Best Rap Video, merely lost to Ludacris' "Number One Spot". Much Music'south 50 Almost Controversial Videos ranked it #1 for its jokes on famous people.
Controversy [edit]
The music video for "Only Lose Information technology" generated controversy by parodying singer Michael Jackson's child molestation trial, plastic surgery and an incident in 1984 when Jackson's hair caught burn whilst filming a Pepsi commercial.[15]
A week after the release of "Simply Lose Information technology", Jackson called into Steve Harvey'south radio prove to report his displeasure with the video. "I am very angry at Eminem'southward depiction of me in his video," Jackson said in the interview. "I feel that it is outrageous and disrespectful. It is ane thing to spoof, but it is another to be demeaning and insensitive." Jackson connected: "I've admired Eminem equally an artist, and was shocked by this. The video was inappropriate and disrespectful to me, my children, my family and the community at large."[16] Many of Jackson's supporters and friends spoke out about the video, including Stevie Wonder, who called it "kick a homo while he'due south downwardly" and "bullshit",[17] and Harvey, who alleged, "Eminem has lost his ghetto pass. We desire the pass back."[17] The video was banned on the BET channel, afterwards complaints from Benzino and others (but was later reinstated, as critics of the ban argued that Nelly'south "Tip Drill" video which has been alleged to be misogynistic was aired; both were seen on BET: Uncut). However MTV did not drop it, and the video became i of the most requested on the channel.
