Trine 2 How to Continue a Muitiplayer Game

This page contains workarounds and information about Online Multiplayer errors and issues that might occur in the Trine games on PC, but there is a small section for 🎮 Consoles included as well. The games all this info applies to are listed below.

  • Trine Enchanted Edition
  • Trine 2
  • Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power

Parts of these instructions also apply to Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince and Nine Parchments – the biggest difference is the error codes, which are slightly different in Trine 4 and Nine Parchments in comparison to Trine 1-3. There is also a separate section for Trine 4 as well.

If you have any questions, please email us at the following address. However, please note that we recommend going through this page first, especially the Help section. 🙂

General Information

Trine games 1-3 support cross-platform multiplayer between Windows, Mac and Linux. However, note that some, usually just older, versions might not work together.

The Online Multiplayer works very well for the most part as most players never encounter any problems, but unfortunately some players have trouble with online matches. Usually the issues are related to connecting to other players. Sometimes the game will output an error code when it can, which might explain why the problem occurred. You can see the explanations for error codes below.

Please note that one reason for errors can be as simple as the servers might be under heavy load at the moment. That's why it's advised to try a few times at least and maybe at different times during the day. If the error codes are always different, it might indicate that the problem isn't permanent, and that you'll get through after enough tries.

If this guide doesn't help you with your problem, remember to check the Further Help title for how to report the issue, so we can help you efficiently!

Error Codes

Below are error codes that might show up in-game and their explanations.

0 = NetErrorUnknown

Help

This section covers possible workarounds. Please read through them carefully! If none of them helps, please head to the Further Help section to know what's the best way to contact us for further assistance.

How to Start Solving the Problem?

Please first check that you don't have an antivirus or some other security program that is blocking the game. To avoid this, we recommend add the game you're having trouble with to your security program's exceptions.

If that doesn't help, please also try playing online at a different time. This is worth a try in case your connection is loaded by programs that are not in your control. Do make sure you close all downloads on your own computer(s) as well just in case.

On Windows, starting the game as administrator has helped many players, so it's definitely recommended. You can do this simply by going to the game's installation folder and right-clicking the game's executable (trine1_32bit.exe, trine2_32bit.exe or trine3_64bit.exe) and choosing Run As Administrator. Note that there are two executables for Trine 3 – you can try both or choose the one that corresponds to your operating system version.

Another Windows-related workaround is to go to the following folder. You can just paste it to Windows Explorer or search for it with Windows+R.

%AppData%

In AppData, choose the game's folder, and delete the options.txt file. After this open the game normally. This will force the game to reset its settings, which has often helped.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, take a look at the other titles on this page.

Private and Public Games

There have been reports that Private games have more issues than Public ones. So if you're having problems with Private games, please also try a Public one and see if it has the same issues.

Unfortunately we don't know why this happens, but we hope you can play Public games if the Private ones don't work as well.

Private Games with a Password

Even if you are invited by your friend on Steam, you sometimes may get a Bad Password pop-up. If this happens, go to the Multiplayer / Join Online Game menu, and join the Private game manually. This has been patched already, but in case it still happens, joining manually should do the trick. When joining the game, first enter the password at the bottom of the screen, and then click on the server to join.

Try an Older Version

There might be older versions available for your game from Steam. Note that your friends must use the same version to play together with you, and that this might mess up your save files.

If this sounds okay, here's how you can check if there are any other versions available and how to download them:

Go to your Steam Library and right-click the game. Select Properties → Betas → click the dropdown menu and choose one of the builds from the list → close Properties.
If Steam doesn't start the download automatically, verify the game's cache from Steam by right-clicking the game again in your Steam Library and go to Properties → Local Files → Verify integrity of game cache.

Hamachi

We have gotten many reports about issues with Trine games and this problem, so if you are experiencing issues with Online Multiplayer and are using Hamachi, we recommend closing Hamachi and disabling its virtual Hamachi network card before trying the game again.

Note that also other programs that create a LAN-like network can interfere with the games, so it's recommended to close them as well.

Open Correct Ports

This refers to the UDP ports from your router. There are many guides for how to forward the ports online, but if you're unsure please contact your Internet service provider. You can ask them for help, or search online for methods to actually check if the ports are open or not.

Trine games use the UDP ports from 27300 to 27315, but you can change the range from the game's options.txt file. See the instructions below for how to find this file.

▸ Location of options.txt

On Windows, the files are in %AppData%. It's normally a hidden folder, but you can find it by copy-pasting the name to Windows Explorer or by using Windows+R to search for it. After finding the folder, locate the correct game folder (Trine1, Trine2, Trine3, Trine4) and open it. The options.txt file is in the game's folder.

On Mac the folders are in the ~/Library/ folder.

On Linux the options.txt file is located in the HOME directory under .frozenbyte.

🎮Consoles

Some of the general information, such as the recommendation to try both Private and Public games, goes for consoles as well. However, you can't change as many settings in the console versions, and because of this we recommend looking at the console's network options, and also contacting your Internet service provider if you're using for further assistance.

It might seem strange, but it's very important to adjust your router to fit your console. Especially PlayStation 4 might need some adjustments from your Internet service provider. There might also be online guides to improve your console's connection, but it's usually easier to ask your Internet service provider directly.

Also, as a final tip, we recommend using a wired connection instead of a wireless one if at all possible.

If nothing on this site seems to help, just email us with the following information and we'll be happy to help you! Remember to also mention if you're having issues connecting to a one specific friend, or if the problem exists with all online matches.

  • The title of the game
Which Trine game are you trying to play?
  • Your platform
Which console are you trying to play on?
  • Description of the problem
When and how often is the issue occurring? Did you see any error messages or error codes?
  • Your location
The country and the city you're located in. What region is your console registered at?
  • Your Internet service provider and connection speed
This information together with your location might reveal what kind of quality can be expected.

After getting the info, email it to us at the following address. If you've reported the problem elsewhere (for example on Discord, a forum, etc.), remember to mention it and possible include a link to the report so we know it's you.

Further Help

If the above workarounds didn't help, this section explains what kind of information we need to look into your case. However, do note that if you're experienced with computers you could also try the 📡 LAN Only Option. When sending a report to us, we recommend including all of the information mentioned under "Important Information", but it's okay if you leave out information you couldn't find.

Important Information

What kind of information we need to look into your case most efficiently. Try to include as many of them as you can. Note that if you're having trouble connecting to or playing with a specific friend(s), we might need this info from them as well.

  • The title of the game
remember to mention which game(s) you're trying to play
  • List of possible error codes you may have received
    even if it's just one
  • Description of the problem
including how often it happens and what exactly do you do when the issue shows up
  • Your net log output
instructions just a bit further below
  • What game settings you are using?
like your resolution, graphics detail level etc. You can also just take a picture from your launcher or the game's Options or Settings screen.
  • Your operating system and other computer information
Computer information stands for system specifications, like your operating system, the amount of available RAM, your graphics card, and processor model. For help with this see here.
  • Your location
Just your country and city is enough.
  • Your Internet service provider and connection speed
This information together with your location might reveal what kind of quality can be expected.

After getting the info, email it to us to the following address. If you've reported the problem elsewhere (for example on Discord, a forum, etc.), remember to mention it and possible include a link to the report so we know it's you.

How to Enable Multiplayer Logging?

Here's how you can enable multiplayer netlogs, which can help us solve the issue. Note that you can also just paste them to a message or email instead of sending the file as an attachment.

In the game's options.txt is a line:

setOption(networkModule, "NetLogEnabled", false)

As you might have guessed, you just have to replace the value "false" to "true". After doing this save the file, start the game, and try playing online. After your session you can find a log file under the log folder in the game's installation folder. Please make sure that the log file you send us is the newest file, if there are multiple files in the folder.

If you don't remember where the options.txt is, go to this part.

System Specifications

This section tells how to get information about your system. Usually the basic operating system, amount of RAM, graphics card and processor models are enough.

On Windows, one way to see your system specs is to use the DxDiag tool. Here's how to access it:

  • Search for the dxdiag.exe with the Windows Search tool
  • Open dxdiag.exe
  • Copy the information from there or save them with the button "Save All Information…" and send us the .txt file

On Mac, press the Apple icon and choose the About This Mac option. Just taking a screenshot of that window is enough.

On Linux, please see help for your distro but here is a site that should help. Also mentioning your distro's version number is very helpful.

📡 LAN Only Option

If nothing else works, you could try to play the game using the LAN only mode. Note that this is for more advanced users only, because if you're not in the same network you also need to use a separate program to establish a LAN network, and we can't guarantee the game will work with third party softwares. This setting will also prevent you from joining other people's games in Trine.

If you'd still like to try this, have all of the participants connect to the same network, and change the following line in the game's options.txt to match the following:

setOption(networkModule, "UseLANOnly", true)

You can just change the line back to "false" to disable this option later.

Please also note that if you edited the options.txt file earlier, it might be necessarily to reset it for the LAN only mode for it to work correctly. You can reset the options.txt simply by deleting it. A new file with default options will be created automatically when you launch the game again.

Trine 4

This section is for online multiplayer troubleshooting in Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince and Melody of Mystery if the Help section didn't help.

Steam Privacy Settings

Check your Steam profile's privacy settings. My Privacy Settings → My Profile → My Games should be set to Public or Friends only. We've heard from several players that having it set to Private has caused problems in online multiplayer.

Check All Updates

Check that you have all available game updates installed. The easiest way to do this is by checking what Build number you currently have by going to Main Menu → Options. There is small text at the bottom right corner of the screen that says what Version and Build number of the game you currently have. Note that if you want to play online multiplayer with friends, they also need to have the same Build number as you. You can check what the latest public Build number is here – just look for the latest patch update on the list.

If you suspect that you're missing an update, verifying the game cache can help. On Steam, you can do this by right-clicking Trine 4 in your Steam library and going to Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files. On GOG, you can do this by clicking the game and selecting More → Manage → Verify.

Edit Network Settings

If nothing else helps, you can edit the game's network settings in its options file. First, turn off the game and navigate to %AppData%. Find the Trine4 folder, open it, and open options.txt in a text editor.

Search for this line:

setOption(networkModule, "PreferCustomP2PChannels2", false)

Edit the line and set "false" to "true". Remember to save the file after this. If you're playing with certain friends, note that they need to do this on their computers as well.

🎮 Trine 4 on Consoles

Checking for Updates

First, check that you have all game updates installed.

On Playstation 4, this can be done via Home screen → Notifications by checking that there any no pending updates for Trine 4.

On Nintendo Switch, go to the Home menu, select Trine 4's game icon without starting the game. Then press the Plus or Minus button on your controller, select Software Update → Via the Internet.

On Xbox One, game updates should be automatic as long as you're connected to the Internet.

Change Playstation NAT Type

Your Network Address Translation type, or NAT, affects online multiplayer. If you're having problems connecting to online games, check your NAT type. This can be done by going to Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection. After the test it'll show you your NAT Type. You need either Type 1 or Type 2. If your NAT type is 3, you need to change it. There are online guides for how to do this.

If you're only having issues connecting with certain friends, it's recommended that they do all these steps on their consoles as well. This is because we can't tell if the issue is at your end or theirs.

Character Invisible on PS4

This issue occurs sometimes in online multiplayer games on Playstation 4. There are a couple of ways to fix it.

1. Try to Change Characters

Some players have managed to solve this issue by changing characters, which is possible starting from level 4 "Craghill Moors". There might also be a difference depending on if you play the game in classic or unlimited mode.

2. Try PlayStation's Share Play

Note that you need only one copy of the game to do this.

3. Set MTU Number from 1500 to 1473

To do this, go to your Home screen and go to Settings → Network and select "Set Up Internet Connection". Then, select your preferred method (Wifi/LAN), select "Custom", and set up your IP Address Settings, DHCP Host Name, DNS settings as you normally would (automatically or manually). Select "Manual" when you get to MTU Settings and change the MTU to 1473. After this set up Proxy Server as you normally would.
